The team only met for the first time on Monday after the Corona wave. Large parts of the team had been infected with the virus and now the Euroleague game at Panathinaikos Athens was imminent.
Normally, the roles in this game would have been clear: The Greeks are bottom of the table in the top division of European basketball. But in their first game in two weeks, Bayern lost 67-80 (35-42) at Panathinaikos Athens on Tuesday.
Poor start to the game
At the beginning you noticed the long mandatory break in Munich. They allowed 26 points in the first quarter and went into the second quarter ten points behind. There they were able to improve defensively and reduce the gap to up to three points. However, Athens pulled away again and deservedly led 42:35 at the break.
Lucic injury halts comeback
After a weak start to the second half, the visitors caught themselves in the middle of the third quarter. The throws fell from beyond the three-point line and so the team of trainer Andrea Trincheri even came close to one point. But after point guard Vladimir Lucic was injured four and a half minutes before the end, they only managed to score one goal, so that the defeat was clear in the end.
After Russia exclusion: Good chances of playoffs
Despite the defeat, FC Bayern still has a good chance of making the playoffs. However, since the league finally took the Russian teams out of the competition a few hours before the match and canceled their duels, the Munich team are now one of the eight teams that would make it to the playoffs as things stand at present. Munich are in sixth place, previously they were still in twelfth place.
