In 2023, the FNV trade union went on behalf of hundreds of suitcases to court. Because of their years of heavy work, a large part of them would have back, shoulder, neck or knee problems.
The Labor Inspectorate summoned Schiphol and the luggage riders to illuminate the work of luggage staff. And to make it almost with that. Yet the watchdog was not fast enough, on which the handling companies fines of tens of thousands of euros were imposed.
Deadline not met
At that time, Schiphol had already invested in a few dozen hulps, and wanted that in April 2024 all workplaces were equipped with such a til aid. That turned out to be too ambitious: in April last year 157 of the 385 workshops have not yet been provided of the device.
Fifteen months later it is that time. “This makes the work of luggage employees lighter,” says Schiphol. “An important improvement. We have tested, bought and placed the Tilhulpen at a rapid pace, while the normal luggage process continued.”
From six to three luggage dealers
With Aviapartner, DNATA, KLM, Menzies, Swissport and Viggo, Schiphol now has six luggage dealers. That should there be threethe Rutte IV cabinet decided to reduce competition and improve working conditions.
It is not that far yet, and there is also much more work to be done in the Bagagekelder. The Labor Inspectorate wants Schiphol to fully automate the Bagagekelder.
Self -driving luggage cart
Earlier this year, Schiphol started a test with a self -driving luggage cart that can also autonomously get a suitcase filled in and out of the plane autonomously. That experiment runs until the end of this year. Until then, he is mainly used to bring luggage from transferring passengers from aircraft A to aircraft B.
“At the moment all those suitcases are entering the system at the same time, which gives enormous pressure,” Chris Roos told NH earlier. “What we can do with this vehicle is to keep part of the suitcases apart. This allows us to relieve the system, but also the employees.”
