Former U18 national player Jason Amann is leaving his youth club 1. FSV Mainz 05 for free at the end of the season and joining Viktoria Köln. The 21-year-old defensive midfielder was introduced to the third division club on Sunday as the fourth external newcomer after Eric Gueye (26, RWO), Niklas Castelle (23, Ulm) and Niklas Jahn (21, Bochum II). Amann, who has played in the Mainz youth team since 2020, has been a regular in the reserves in the Regionalliga Südwest for the past two seasons. In total he made 65 appearances for coach Benjamin Hoffmann’s team.

Valentin Schäfer, Sporting Director Viktoria Köln, said in a statement from the club: “Jason has been a top performer in all of Mainz’s youth teams in recent years and is already very advanced for his age. As a defensive-oriented player, he is versatile and can play both as a defensive six and in the chain. On the field, he is characterized by his mentality, tackling strength and passing quality.”

Amann himself said: “I had a good feeling right from the start when talking to those responsible. I am convinced that I can develop very well here in this special and calm environment and take the next steps in my career.” He said about his strengths: “I am characterized by a good build-up game and defensive duel strength. I am looking forward to the task here at Viktoria.”
