Explosive material was actually present in the car, according to research by the Explosives Clearance Service Defense (EOD). The material was taken by the EOD and is made harmless elsewhere. Residents of two flats on nearby Asialaan were evacuated as a precaution.
A spokeswoman for the police could not say what explosive material was found in the car. She says that the car is still there and that the police are still present to investigate further.
Images showed that it was a black car containing jerry cans. According to RTV Utrecht, a parking lot at Sportpark Galecop in Nieuwegein was also deposited on Tuesday evening after the find of a similar JerryCan. The police spokeswoman could not say whether there is a connection between the two incidents.
A resident of one of the flats further informed the regional broadcaster that the car was initially chased by the police. The police did not want to say anything about that either. As far as we know, nobody has been arrested.
