Redmond (dpa-AFX)-According to Microsoft, the lane of Microsoft leads to China for the current cyber attacks on numerous companies and authorities. The software group said that three Chinese hacker groups have been identified among the attackers so far. Two of them are known for actions on the state mandate. Microsoft watches them under the names Linen Typhoon and Violet Typhoon.
The attacks are led via a previously unknown weak point in Microsoft software. Such so-called zero-day security gaps are often searched specifically by secret services in order to take advantage of them.
This time, locally operated servers for the SharePoint Microsoft program are affected to share files. As security researchers warn, access to the server potentially opens the opportunity to steal data and to capture passwords. Attackers could also get permanent access to the systems even after stuffing the security gap.
Microsoft has now published updates that are supposed to fix the vulnerability. Most recently, in 2023, Chinese hackers had allegedly accessed emails in some US authorities via a weak point in Microsoft software.
