The fire brigade received a report of an explosion in the home on Schelluinenstraat around a quarter past two last night. Several local residents heard a bang, after which a fire started in the home. A spokesperson for the Amsterdam-Amstelland Security Region reports that it was an explosion in the meter cupboard of the house.
The residents of the house where the explosion took place and ten surrounding apartments cannot return home yet. They are currently being taken care of in a hotel nearby. Two local residents were taken to the hospital because of the inhalation of smoke.
Multiple homes evacuated due to explosion hazard
After the explosion, fire broke out in the hall of the house and a lot of gas was released. Emergency services pulled out en masse to the incident. The fire brigade quickly had the fire in the apartment under control, but decided to evacuate surrounding houses as a precaution due to the risk of explosion through the gas leak.
