From an ‘unelectable’ tenth place on the list of candidates to a seat on the city council of Venray. Richard de la Roy (57) hadn’t necessarily counted on it.
Because Venray Lokaal has become the largest party with two extra seats, life as a councilor continues for Richard de la Roy. With 206 preference votes, his own supporters help him over the threshold in Venray.
Exciting
“With the seven seats for Venray Lokaal I now come in in sixth place. It really only saves a few votes otherwise it would not have worked. It is really exciting every time whether it works.”
Newcomer
The eco-broker from Venray is not a newcomer. De la Roy has been a member of the city council continuously since 2010. His political career started much earlier in 1995 as a councilor for the then party Vorle Party.

Richard de la Roy: “I think the good thing about me is that people know what I’m getting for. I try to do my job as well as possible and that doesn’t have to be in the spotlight.” De la Roy is not really up for an aldermanship, if that were the case at all. “That’s not my ambition at the moment.”

As an entrepreneur, he develops sustainable building materials. Together with another company, Richard de la Roy has developed a kind of paving stone from old wine bottle corks. “We will be presenting that product at the Floriade in Almere in April. That is also a great moment that I am looking forward to.”
