Jasper Philipsen experienced a successful tour start. On the third stage, however, a severe fall led to the end. The sprinter now commented on this.
He wrote to a photo of himself in the bedside: “My tour history. It is difficult to put into words how big the disappointment is after yesterday’s events.” In the photo, which both Philipsen and his team Alpecin-Deceuninck posted, the Belgian wears a hospital shirt and is covered with a beige blanket. The carrier of the green jersey of the third stage holds up his connected arm – with a thumb up. Despite the obvious injury, Philipsen smiles slightly into the camera.
He also explained: “It is very different than I had imagined. But sometimes life beats at a moment when everything is too beautiful to be true. Despite this bitter setback, I proudly look back on what I have achieved: I started in the yellow jersey, passed it on to Mathieu the next day and shone in the green – I was a dream start. My team will continue this beautiful journey through France. “
Philipsen’s teammate Mathieu van der Poel won the second stage and wore the yellow jersey on the third stage. The fourth stage also matters the Dutch as a currently overall leader in yellow. However, he said on Monday at ITV: “It is difficult to be happy. We are fighting for Jasper.”
