So far, the tour for Jasper Philipsen has been excellent. But on Monday the Belgian fell heavily – and now has to leave the major event.

What a tragic turn for the Team Alpecin-Deceuninck at the Tour de France: the first stage won sprint star Jasper Philipsen. He started at the second stage in the yellow jersey and drove in the green jersey at the third stage on Monday. But then an accident happened: the Belgian fell heavily around 60 kilometers before the finish in Dunkirk – and has to leave the major event. Shortly after the fall, the ARD announced that the tour radio had already announced that it would not go on for Philipsen. He was medical care on the roadside.

How did the fall came about? The fall of the Belgian Laurenz Rex, which brought Cofidis driver Bryan Coquard out of balance. Coquard slipped into the front wheel of Philipsen. This flew over his handlebar and landed directly on his shoulder. He also had grazes on his back. First his teammates were still waiting for him, then they continued. This was also a sign of touring, otherwise the team would not have left their sprint star back. The team also confirmed the tour.

Alpecin-Deceuninck wrote on Instagram: “Joy and suffering are close together. Jasper Philipsen has to leave the tour. An update regarding his health follows as quickly as possible. We are all with you, Jasper.”

A bitter turn for the team, which has so far experienced a dream start. After Philipsen secured the first stage win, his team -mate Mathieu van der Poel won the second stage on Sunday. It is now possible that the team focuses entirely on the success of Van der Poel.
