The former Kaufhof house in downtown Nuremberg has found a new user. On Monday, the clothing provider Rudolf Wöhrl SE announced that he wanted to set up an outlet store in the property, which has been vacant since 2023.
With the city of Nuremberg, which had acquired the building in Königstrasse in 2024, a rental contract was signed “for a large -scale intermediate use”, Wöhrl said on Monday. On the ground floor, which has an area of around 3,000 square meters, the clothing provider now wants to open the new outlet in late summer after extensive renovation measures.
Wöhrl announces an “attractive retail concept”
The plan is “an attractive retail concept that is supplemented by temporary formats such as pop-up stores and shop-in-shop offers,” says a message. “Urban projects” could also “be integrated as part of the temporary use”.
For Christian Greiner, the owner and chairman of the supervisory board of Wöhrl, the project is another commitment to the company’s hometown. “Nuremberg is the nucleus and still headquarters of our company. So the revitalization and attractiveness of the city center is extremely important to us,” he said in a statement. “We clearly expressed our commitment three years ago with the expansion and reopening of our parent company. We are very happy to make another contribution with the opening of the new area.”
Greiner also relies on a role model: “In addition, we hope that this step also motivates other companies to return to the city and make the heart of Nuremberg even more attractive,” he emphasized.
Nuremberg Mayor Marcus König paid tribute to the agreement. “With today’s signing of the contract, we bring new life to the former Kaufhof building and thus to the immediate center of our city center,” he said. “I am pleased that we work with a committed Nuremberg family company that is ready to invest comprehensively here and to breathe life into the building on Königstrasse again.”
