“She is doing well. Ellie has since recovered from the shock,” laughs Gerrit Geus on the phone. Together with his wife, he takes care of a group of ponies.

When his wife joined the pasture this morning to take care of the ponies, it turned out that one was surprised. “She turned out to have ended up in the ditch,” says Geus. First he and his son tried to pull the pony there, but in vain.

With the help of eight firefighters from the area, Ellie was eventually pulled out of the ditch. “We first let her get shocked and rolled on her stomach,” says Geus. “She was completely stripped, because of course she had been deep in the water. When she stood on her legs, she faltered for a moment, but now she is standing with the other ponies again.”

Slipped

Geus thinks that Ellie might have been looking for water to drink and then slipped. “It’s a deep ditch, so you don’t just come out of that.” A number of their ponies are used for competitions, but Ellie is not part of that. “Fortunately it is not one of the best,” laughs Geus.
