The plans for the Rensenpark in Emmen continue to focus on the Emmer politically. During the council meeting, several fractions sounded on the progress of the renovation of the park. Or in the case of the VVD their frustrations about the lack of it. Plans for the park went in all directions from the council: from student workshop, to demolition ball and reopening of the city farm.

Group chairman Anita Louwes (PvdA) suggested turning the park into a work and learning place for young people and people with a distance to the labor market. “This is how you create social connection and maintain the park,” says Louwes. The children’s farm could also play a role in that setup.

The VVD leaves little of the approach to the college so far. Councilor Patrick de Jonge mainly misses decisiveness. “We hear ideas and plans, but not concrete proposals to the council.” De Jonge wants to demolish the buildings to make way for green. “We’ve been pouring on for ten years. The buildings are only worse.”

The PVV also joined the debate, with party leader Klaas Bosma who argues for the reopening of the children’s farm, in collaboration with apprenticeships.

Alderman Albert Jan Jakobs, however, advised against the motion of the PVV. According to him, it is currently being investigated the best interpretation for the location of the former city farm.

He labeled the criticism of the VVD as outdated. “There is already plenty of work in the Rensenpark. The public space was refreshed last year and this year. The entrance area, including Diep, the Hospershuis and the Drommedaar, must be ready at the end of this year.” Moreover, conversations with a new party are already ongoing for the interpretation of the giraffe stable, formerly known as the place of the Night Watch of Emmen.
