The Dutchman was reported missing by his family on Thursday after the day before had not returned from Val Soana, on the south side of the so-called Gran Paradiso massif.

Rescue teams who work in the local Alps, and care providers of the Regional Speleology organization- specialized in the rocks in the region- tried to find the Dutchman along the paths of the area, between the Orco Valley and the Chiusella valley.

Last contact at Berghut

The man was walking in the mountainous area that is known for his rugged landscapes and remote mountain huts, local media report. The last contact dates from his arrival at the Berghut Bruno Piazza in Val Chiusella.

From here, according to available information, he headed for Valprato Soana, where a second passage was detected. On the morning of June 18, he confirmed his departure to the Dondonda Berghut, located in the Valle d’Aosta. He never arrived there.

The Dutchman – about whom no other details such as his age have been announced – followed a challenging route that requires a lot of experience and good preparation. The Alpine rescue service initiated the usual procedures in the hours after the report.

Technicians checked the mobile telephone signal of the walker and managed to identify the last connection to a telephone booth in the high-lying areas of the Soana Valley. The connection was mainly detected in a large area above the hamlet of Campiglia Soana.
