Joke’s parents from Brabant take a relieved breath when they stand by the side of the road in Wognum. “This is not too bad, now that the sun is a bit gone.” They know how heavy running – one of the three parts of the triathlon – can be. With full sun that had been extra for their daughter.
‘Not one Heatgeval’
Hit two years ago Fifty participants overheatedof whom eight had to go to the hospital. This year it remained calm. “Now no one heat related incident has happened,” says organizer Loek Schreurs satisfied.
Drop -outs were there. “But you always see that at such a triathlon,” explains Schreurs. After the 1.9 kilometers of swimming through the port of Hoorn, thirty athletes gave up. At the 90-kilometer bike ride through West Friesland and at the half marathon, another thirty athletes fell.
Extra ice cubes
The extra measuressuch as nozzles and more water points along the route, were gratefully used by the athletes. “Only we are still left with a lot of ice cubes, because that was really not necessary,” says organizer Schreurs. “So if you know someone else who wants to take over that from me, I would love to hear from you.”
