The bill that includes the rules from the European asylum and migration pact in Dutch legislation is sent by Minister Van Hijum to the Council of State for advice.
Minister Van Hijum: “This bill is an important step towards a stricter European shelter system. That means stronger external borders, more efficient procedures, more return and combating illegal migration.”
European asylum and migration pact
On June 12, 2026, the EU asylum and migration pact comes into effect. From then on there is one joint European shelter system. The pact contains regulations and a directive that must ensure that the influx of asylum seekers to the Netherlands and the EU is decreasing and the costs between the Member States are better distributed.
For example, the asylum and migration pact strengthens European external borders through better screening of foreigners and a faster procedure for asylum seekers come from countries with little insight into the EU’s stay. This procedure must be completed within 12 weeks. This way it is quickly clarity whether someone can stay or should return. A return procedure is set up for this on the borders of the EU.
There will also be agreements to set the collection systems in the various Member States more equally. In addition, traveling through asylum seekers between the different countries must be reduced.
For example, the possibilities are increased to deposit asylum seekers who apply for asylum under the Dublin scheme.
