The devastating fire that put the monumental country house on the Burgstsedreef in Breda in the axis at the beginning of this month was not caused by arson. The police report this. The police make no statements about a possible other cause. “Unfortunately, there is no more to say about it.”
The fire was discovered around half past three at night. The fire started on the ground floor. The fire brigade was present with a lot of equipment to extinguish the fire on the estate, which is surrounded by forest and is fairly close to a residential area.
Eighteen people in Landhuis
After the destructive fire, only a few walls from the country house from 1790 were standing up. Furthermore, there was nothing left of it. Eighteen people were in the building when the fire broke out, but they could come out on time.
Estate owner Marcel van Hooijdonk has been fighting with the municipality for years. This relates to a number of barns and a swimming pool that he wants to construct there, but the municipality has been refusing a permit since 2016.
