U21 duel against England
Floodlights fail: Germany game interrupted
18.06.2025 – 10:19 p.m.Reading time: 1 min.

The German U21 leads against England when a floodlight is. The referee is looking for talks and then whistles prematurely for the break.
The failure of a floodlight mast caused an unusual interruption in the European Championship group final of the German U21 national team against England. Shortly before the half -time whistle, one of the light systems in the Nitra stadium was 2-0 for the German team – a scene that triggered confusion with players, supervisors and spectators.
Coach Antonio di Salvo asked his gaze questioningly, just like many in the ranks. The failure of a single floodlight mast left part of the field in half light. In the unusual situation, referee Sander van der Eijk from the Netherlands initially exchanged the fourth official Jakob Sundberg from Denmark.
Afterwards the referee called the two capitals – on the German side of Merlin Röhl, on English Harvey Elliott. While the participants rated the situation, a few minutes passed.
Since the game was shortly before the break anyway and nothing changed in the technical situation, the referee finally decided to end the first half early and ask the teams to the cabins. After the change of sides, the light worked again and it could be continued normally.
