More than 200 injured by collapsed football stand in India | Abroad

At least 225 people have been injured in southern India after a grandstand collapsed during a football tournament. That has been reported to the police.

Social media shows how part of the stand, made of wooden planks, collapsed. It happened in Malappuram, in the southern state of Kerala. Panic ensued and supporters were injured. Many were taken to nearby hospitals. Several children were among the injured. Six people are said to be in serious condition.

The stands could not withstand the too large number of supporters, according to a police chief. The structure may have been weakened by the rain. The grandstand was made for 3,500 people, but there would have been almost 8,000 people.

The organizers would not have intervened, even if all the places had been taken. Police have filed a complaint against them and announced arrests.
