At the beginning of his coaching career, Schultz had worked for the juniors and professionals of FC St. Pauli. After his ward at the Swiss first division club FC Basel, the native East Frisian took over 1st FC Köln in winter 2024. However, he had not prevented the descent into the 2nd Bundesliga, and at the end of the season Schultz and the association went separate paths.
