The Russian invasion in Ukraine is not over yet. It is important that refugees from Ukraine can continue to count on our support. That is why the European Commission proposed on 4 June 2025 to extend the Temporary Protection Directive (RTB) by one year up to and including 4 March 2027.

The European Ministers of Justice and the Interior today approved the proposal during a meeting in Luxembourg. Probably the formal decision -making in the Council of the European Union will follow at the end of June.

When millions of people from Ukraine fled for the Russian invasion, the Council of the European Union put the RTB into effect on 4 March 2022. With this, refugees from Ukraine in all EU member states have a temporary right to reception, medical care, work and education. It also gives the opportunity to work.
