The Welsh Caldicot is not a place that has been writing rock history so far, but we know that in the smallest beetles the best bands slip. Sam Willmett and Tilly Harris started writing songs together as a teenager. Motor was a friendship that is still reflected in her musical dynamics by The Bug Club.
Her sound is an editor as cantile as an esprit symbiosis: driving guitars, pointed rhythms and texts that look at everyday life with fine irony. The recordings sometimes look sketchy, but always thought well. A good year after On The Intricate Inner Workings of the System now follows the second publication for Sub Pop with Very Human Features. Here the band bundles the energy mentioned in eleven pieces, which are always looking for the big melody even in their quieter moments.
It is nibbled on everything that has been cycling around in the past 40 years. So we hear Postpunk, Power Pop and a little class-of-2005 swagger, although the pose never plays a big role, the two are too spleen for that. Melody and noise encounter each other in particular when the two voices do so, for example in the casual “How to be a confidant”, the distorted “The Sound of Communism” or the final “Appropiat emotions”: Here, the two search for the right situation according to the right feeling. You have to get an earwig from it, you have to get there first.
