Horst Steffen has arrived in Bremen and the new trainer could get really well with his clear idea of football at Werder and his fans.
Horst Steffen, which was common in Bremen, did not yet have Horst Steffen ready as a greeting on Tuesday, but his first three-quarters of speaking time as a Werder coach left the impression that one had expected. Because many describe Steffen as a human scene.
The 56-year-old native of Rhineland actually has something very open, obvious and looks sympathetic with his authentic way. Fears of contact seem to be foreign to him. In recent years, Steffen had already been experienced at his seven previous coaching stations, most recently during the seven years at SV Elversberg. Steffen also made it interesting for other clubs that he had almost led the small village club from Saarland from the regional league to the Bundesliga.
“Werder is my chance, me to further develop “
I radiated a lot of positive energy: Werder’s new coach Horst Steffen.
“I have already trained almost all leagues in my life,” says Steffen. But so far he has been missing the Bundesliga. And so the broad football audience now gets to know him again. The former professional is now almost a late professor in the highest division. There have probably been offers before, but only when Werder reported, “I didn’t have to think long. I knew that it is my chance to develop myself further.”
And Steffen in Bremen is supposed to develop the team in particular and in the process of bringing his hand for young talents. “Basically, I like to use young players,” said Steffen: “But the potential must also be there.” Steffen was able to get an impression of Werders U19, who has just won the DFB Cup. “These are good boys. One or the other could move up.”
Player preferences? “Young, medium -sized, old”
But Steffen also immediately made it clear that established players were of course not written off from him. “Young, medium-sized, old”-the new Werder trainer likes every player age, almost like cheese. After barely a week in his new role at Werder, Steffen does not want to be too hastily committed to goals or players. He wants to get a lot of impressions first, watch videos, have talks.
He stays true to himself and does not miss his serenity in the excited Bundesliga business. But when he talks about football itself, he shines even more and it is clear, simple keywords with which many supporters of sport can identify.
We want to play great football, show passion and enthusiasm.

Steffen with a clear football philosophy
Coach Horst Steffen (left) also transported the joy of play with second division SV Elversberg last season.
Joy, commitment, team spirit, intensity, community – the desire and mood of football should be transferred, also to the fans in the stands and in front of the screens. This is Steffen’s philosophy and again and again he emphasizes how important he is. A lot sounds like very clear, but also simple foundations. But in professional football, these may be the most difficult to enforce. “I am pleased that news from previous players come from all sorts of leagues,” says Steffen: “Then you notice that you have left something of value.”
It remains to be seen whether he will also succeed in Bremen. Steffen smiles a lot that day. He radiates that he is very pleased and curious about his new task and, as a type, transports exactly the enthusiasm that he also wants to spark on the lawn with Werder. Which players he can do with this in the coming season is still open. However, according to managing director Clemens Fritz, the squad planning should already run. In any case, Werder has already found his desired candidate on the coaching position.
