The Nordic Ski World Cup is always a highlight in the seasonal calendar. The German Ski Association now wants to bring the event back into the country.

The German Ski Association wants to bring the World Championships in ski jumping, cross -country skiing and in the Nordic combination to Oberstdorf in 2031. This gives the Bavarian winter sports resort preferred compared to a possible application from Saxony with the locations of Oberwiesenthal and Klingenthal.

According to the DSV, the decision was made as part of a joint coordination of the organizers involved. Heiko Krause, President of the Saxony Ski Association, said according to the announcement: “After weighing up the German application opportunities and careful examination of the infrastructural necessities for a World Cup orientation, we have approved a German application with the Oberstdorf location.” At the same time, he emphasized that it was still the goal to bring the Nordic Ski World Cup to Saxony in the future.

The DSV had originally made an application for 2033. However, after the Austrian applicants Ramsau and Bischofshofen withdraw, the association changed its strategy. The short -term planning was to be implemented more realistically with Oberstdorf, since World Championships took place there in 1987, 2005 and 2021. The edition in 2021 was due to the Corona pandemic without spectators.

The decision about the 2031 venue is to be made in about a year. The only competitor is Planica. However, the Slovenian place was only hosting the title fights in 2023, which could increase the opportunities for Oberstdorf.
