Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson has switched from Fortuna Düsseldorf to 1. FC Köln. The Icelandic international then justified his step on social media.
The 1st FC Köln spoke Bergmann Jóhannesson from the permanent rival Fortuna Düsseldorf. The central midfielder signed a long-term contract with the Bundesliga promoter until 2030.
Jóhannesson personally addressed Fortuna Düsseldorf’s fans on Instagram on Sunday to explain his piquant change to the other side of the Rhine.
“I know that nothing I will say will calm you down, but I understand your feelings perfectly,” the 22-year-old opened his statement.
Jóhannesson stated: “I thought a lot of you, and this decision was not easy for me, but a boy had the dream of playing in the Bundesliga, and now this boy has this chance.”
While the 1st FC Köln ended the last season in the 2nd Bundesliga in the first place in the table, Fortuna Düsseldorf was only sixth.
“My feelings for the club are still the same”
“I know that many of you will hate me, but my feelings for the club are still the same. The exit clause was activated and I had to make a decision,” Jóhannesson said to Fortuna fans.
The Icelander thanked the club and the supporters for the support. Jóhannesson switched from FC Copenhagen to F95 in 2023. The two years in Düsseldorf were “simply incredible”, the midfielder made it clear.
“We would have liked to go into the next season with ísak, but the development was foreseeable. After his loan, we were able to continue to tie such a talented player by granting an exit clause to Fortuna. Due to his strong development in particular this season, we were clear that he would call first division on the schedule,” said Klaus Allofs, Board of Directors Sport & Communication at Fortuna Düsseldorf Transfer.
