An American military plane with four people on board has crashed in northern Norway. That happened just south of Bodø, Norwegian rescue services reported in local media.
The crew was on a training mission with the V-22 Osprey aircraft. It was supposed to arrive in Bodø around 6pm, but it didn’t. A search for the aircraft was eventually launched. The site of the crash was found from the air just after 9:17 p.m. reports the Norwegian aftenposten† According to news agency Reuters An emergency signal was sent from the spot on the ground.
The condition of the crew is unknown at this time. Rescue services are on their way to the spot on the ground.
There has been bad weather in the area, a spokesman for the Norwegian rescue services told the newspaper. And there is a good chance that the weather will get even worse in the near future.
NATO exercise Cold Response
The American plane took part in the NATO Cold Response 2022 exercise. That exercise started last Monday and will last until April 1. Thirty thousand soldiers from 27 countries, including the Netherlands, and about 200 aircraft and 50 ships are deployed.
The aim is to test how Norway will deal with reinforcements from NATO allies should they have to come to the rescue if the country bordering Russia is attacked. “It’s a defensive exercise,” said Norwegian General Yngve Odlo, who leads Cold Response.
