If you looked closely at Tottenham Hotspur when handing over the Europa League trophy, you missed a few medals. Captain Son also went away empty -handed.
After the Europa League final, the UEFA publicly apologized on Wednesday-the reason was an embarrassing breakdown when it was awarded the medal to title holder Tottenham Hotspur. Despite the 1-0 final victory against Manchester United, several players were empty at the award ceremony at the podium, including captain Heung-Min Son.
After the final whistle in Bilbao and the fourth European title in the club’s history, the Spurs celebrated their triumph, but the award ceremony was not smooth. Son raised the trophy as a team captain, but without a medal around his neck. There were also two other players on stage without an award.
As British media reported on Thursday, the European Football Association spoke of an “unexpected discrepancy in the number of players”. More team members for ceremony have appeared than planned, also injured actors. Therefore, the number of medals provided was not sufficient.
The UEFA made it clear that the missing medals were immediately presented to the team in the cabin. This was accompanied by a “sincere apology” for the mishap. Despite the incident, Tottenham was able to complete the evening with the deserved trophy and the title win.
