The Flemish Waterweg, responsible for the management of navigable watercourses such as the Leie and the Ghent-Ostend canal, warns that the situation is becoming increasingly worse. “Since March there is hardly any rain, which means that the water level falls sharply,” says Geert Weymeis of the Flemish Waterweg.
With a network of bulkheads and weirs, the Flemish Waterweg controls the water level, crucial for industry, drinking water and shipping. The drought committee will determine tomorrow how the available water is distributed and what measures are required. Yet the Flemish Waterweg mainly hopes for one thing: rain.
