Borussia Dortmund is qualified for the Champions League after a long completely messed up season. TV expert Dietmar Hamann looks at BVB after the arrival of coach Niko Kovac as the best Bundesliga team behind FC Bayern.
Borussia Dortmund passed the 34th matchday of the Bundesliga on SC Freiburg and thus ensured a conciliatory end of the season.
For a long time, BVB even had to worry about participating in the European Cup. Coach Niko Kovac took over the Dortmund after the end of the predecessor Nuri Sahin in February in eleventh place. After the 3-0 against relegated Holstein Kiel, one thing is certain: the black and yellow have still qualified for the Champions League.

“You have the second best team, the third best team in the league. Of course, they had to pass four or five teams. Only that the Mainz, Wolfsburg and Freiburg, all of which were all above, that they couldn’t keep it over 34 games was clear. Of course they had to win their games or almost all of them.
Only FC Bayern better than BVB?
The 51-year-old restricted: “Also belongs to the whole truth: When Frankfurt beats Pauli last week, they are qualified for the Champions League and then today it is nothing more. That would of course have made the matter a little easier for the Freiburg to win the game today. That means that the others also participated.”
“I always thought that when someone came with a strong hand – the team needs discipline that needs respect, a train has to go in. Niko Kovac stands for that. And in a few weeks he showed what he will get out of the team,” said Hamann.
The Vice World Champion of 2002 gave BVB a positive testimony under Kovac. “Since he was there, they have shown that they are probably the second best team in the league for me,” said Hamann.
The BVB bosses also praised Kovac after the season finale. “What Niko has done is one of BVB’s greatest coaching performance,” enthused sports managing director Lars Ricken in an interview with “Sky”.
