Kurt Cobain was dead and grunge history when Without a sound appeared in the summer of 1994. Dinosaur jr had pushed the genre with it, but could not benefit from the hype. Her sixth album, explained by the music magazine you trust in the September edition of the “Plate of the Month”, marked a transition.

Because drummer Murph had come out a year earlier, band boss J Mascis also took over keyboards and drums in addition to singing and guitar. The relative new member Mike Johnson remained on the bass. On the one hand, Mascis referred to the sound of the classic triobes setting of Dinosaur JR, so: alternative rock songs with distorted, splintering guitar solos and larmoyant, almost pop singing. On the other hand, he showed his introverted side with acoustic ballads such as “Outta Hand” or “Seemed Like the Thing to do”.

After years it worked for the audience

After years in which the band was only able to achieve success among the critics, it also worked for the audience. With 44th place in the Billboard charts, Without a Sound is still her commercially successful album. The “Expanded Edition” depends on the original album seven bonus tracks: alternative mixes and instrumental versions. On a second CD there are concert recordings from the London Brixton Academy from 8.
