The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee (KMar) was carrying out a regular border check at Bad Nieuweschans on Wednesday afternoon around 2.30 pm when a German vehicle crossed the border at high speed.
The guards gave chase and gave the man a stop sign. However, the vehicle was driving so fast that it was difficult for them to keep up and therefore could not force the man to stop. According to the spokesman for the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, speeds of 200 kilometers per hour were achieved.
Several vehicles were searched for the motorist, but a long search was not necessary. The driver of the vehicle collided with a taxi on the A7 near Winschoten. Both vehicles came to a stop in the emergency lane where the driver again rammed into the taxi.

Several emergency services, including the police and an ambulance, arrived on the scene. The taxi was carrying a passenger at the time, this man was taken to the hospital for a check-up just to be sure. Everyone else escaped unscathed.
The case has been transferred from the KMAR to the police. Traffic Forensic Investigation conducted an investigation on the spot. Those involved have been heard. It is unknown whether the man received a police report. “The police investigation is ongoing,” the spokesperson said.
