The training of his AI software Meta AI planned by the Facebook group Meta through user data from Instagram and Facebook is criticized by consumer advocates.
The procedure violated European data protection law, said the Consumer Center North Rhine-Westphalia (VZ NRW). Meta was therefore warned.
According to Meta, VZ NRW plans to apply for an injunction against Meta’s AI training. Such an injunction is threatened by German AI innovation, economic growth and the EU internal market, Meta said in a statement. “This training is common and crucial in the industry that our modern AI products and models increasingly understand and reproduce German culture, language and history better,” it said.
AI is to be trained with contributions from adult users
Meta had announced in mid -April to train his AI “soon” with publicly accessible contributions of adult users and with interactions between users with META AI. According to the consumer advice center, Meta had informed the users of Instagram and Facebook about the project by an inapp announcement or email.
Doubts about the legality of the procedure and Meta have therefore been warned, the consumer center said. If Meta does not voluntarily meet the request, further legal steps will be checked, the data protection expert at the Consumer Center NRW, Christine Steffen, explained. “It is in a hurry because all data that has once been incorporated into the AI can hardly be brought back.”
VZ NRW: Procedure does not meet the legal requirements
Among other things, consumer advocates complain that the specific procedure does not meet the legal requirements. The flat -rate reference to a “legitimate interest” is not enough. Users do not have to accept that their personal information that they have left on the platforms for years will be used for AI training.
“In addition, it cannot be ruled out that particularly sensitive information, which is particularly protected according to the General Data Protection Regulation, is used for AI training purposes,” said Steffen. “Then a so -called opt -out – as META offers – is not enough, but those affected should actively agree.”
Meta: Appointment would be “big setback for consumers”
According to Meta, a possible injunction would be a “big setback for German consumers who want locally relevant AI technology and for German companies that want to build on AI models that understand local nuances”.
According to the consumer advice center, consumers can contradict the use of their public information for AI training purposes before May 27th. Instructions are offered on the VZ NRW homepage. “The objection does not have to be justified, but it is necessary to provide an email address,” it said.
In Nasdaq trading, the meta-share at times is 1.85 percent lower at $ 588.19.
