While in Italy the controversies continue on the alleged illegitimacy in Europe the tests for models have begun, which use artificial intelligence and create variable speed limits

In Europe we try to go beyond the concept of the “punitive” automotive concept: in France and Spain the new generation models are being experienced which, through artificial intelligence, allow to adopt dynamic speed limits based on road conditions. At the same time they are so small as to camouflage themselves in lampposts, traffic lights or road signs. But at least abroad we work to make the theme more uniform, while the eternal controversies on the approval and approval of the devices continue in our country: there are high fines at stake and the possible avalanche of appeals. A few days ago the request that the Ministry led by Matteo Salvini made to the ANCI (the National Association of Italian Municipalities) to carry out a census of the speed cameras on the territories and understand how many are in order. The incredible aspect is that while a regulatory vacuum on the topic continues to exist – because the implementation decree of article 142 of the 1992 highway code is missing – from early March the Tutor 3.0 motorway system was introduced on 26 motorway sections which allows, thanks to a laser scan, to verify the speed of the vehicles. There are 178 motorway strokes controlled for a total of 1,800 km: the new and sophisticated integrate tool integrates different technologies that allow to also detect prohibitions of overtaking of heavy vehicles and guides in the wrong direction.

Near Barcelona

Let’s go back to Spain where the traffic department has started a pilot project in Catalonia, on the section of the AP-7 motorway near Barcelona, in which artificial intelligence will decide what the maximum speed To be respected on the basis of the data collected at that moment, such as the conditions of the road and visibility, the presence of work in progress, the number of vehicles in transit or the hour of the day. A new approach that, in particular situations, also allows to exceed, up to a maximum of 150 km/h, the limit of 120 km/h normally in force on almost all the Spanish highways. Limit that can also be lowered if the situation requires it. To indicate, in real time, the value established by artificial intelligence are the numerous electronic panels, distributed on the motorway section affected by the experimentation.

CAMOUFLAGE

Spain, however, is not the first to have adopted artificial intelligence for speed cameras: already in Germany and France on some streets the speed limits are dynamically managed. In Germany, for example, this system has contributed to minimize accidents in the top hours, while in France variable speed limits have been introduced in the areas subject to sudden weather changes, preventing accidents caused by adverse conditions. Furthermore, France has already installed in several cities 200 since 2024 Equipement de Terrain Urbain (Etu), or a new generation of speed cameras much smaller than their predecessors and designed to camouflage perfectly in the urban furniture. The Etu do not limit themselves to detecting those who exceed speed limits but, thanks precisely to artificial intelligence, they can also monitor passages with the red traffic light, use of the mobile phone to driving or failure to use the seat belt. We are, also in this case, at the beginning of a process of great development.
