The restoration of the Menin Gate, an international memorial symbol for the more than 54,000 missing soldiers of the British Commonwealth, has been completed. During a festive final event, organized by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), the renewed monument was officially inaugurated. Flemish Minister for Real Estate Ben Weyts and Mayor Katrien DESOMER attended the moment.
“The Menin Gate is the symbol par excellence for respect for and remembrance of all the fallen in ‘Flanders Fields’,” says Flemish Minister for Heritage Ben Weyts. “With this restoration we give the message that we will never forget them. And that we have to strive for non -violent peace anytime and anywhere.”
