In Bosschenhoofd and Roosendaal, King’s Day may also get a golden edge in addition to an orange. Bakker Sjoerd Joosen fuels the ‘gold rush’ in his both branches by hiding a piece of gold of five grams in three tompouces, worth four hundred euros.

Zoetawaws do not have to worry about choking in the precious metal. According to Sjoerd, the gold slice is ‘hidden but safe’ packaged. “It is hidden in a kind of debit card just below the top of the Tompouce. So you can’t bite your teeth on it,” the baker assures.

Sjoerd came up with his ‘golden’ idea after he had seen this with a colleague with our southern neighbors. “On a national holiday in Belgium, a pastry chef had hid a gold coin in a cake. That turned out to be a great success.”

“When they are in the store, I no longer know which Tompouce is involved.”

De Bakker gained experience for the first time last year with his action by the ‘Golden Tompouces’. “At that time, we even saw people closely scouring the showcases in the hope of discovering the golden copy. But you really can’t see it on the outside. I hide them myself, but when they are in the store, I no longer know which Tompouce is involved.”

According to Sjoerd, the promotion is of course intended to sell as many tompouces as possible. “We are expected to sell between fifteen hundred and two thousand. Last year we saw that people bought some extra tompouces to take a chance, hahaha.”

The lucky buyers of the Golden Tompouces can have their delicacy cashed in through the bakery at the goldsmith. “Last year there was someone who had found the gold slice in a box of tompouces that she had received as a gift. So that was actually double enjoyment.”
