For many, coffee is an important part of the day. Inka Soveri
Today we are voting and boiling electoral coffee.
Finns are happy to reward themselves for coffee after larger and smaller performances. Coffee is present in everyday life, but traditionally it is also enjoyed in special situations from wedding to funeral. Election coffee has been visited for over 100 years.
In cities, election coffee is often enjoyed after the vote in cafes. At home, election coffee is most likely to be drunk when the vote has been made by the family.
– Making a high quality election coffee at home is easy to pay attention to details. You can improve your coffee experience even with small things like fresh water, coffee quality and freshness, and clean devices, says the founder of the Helsinki Coffee Festival Maija Kestilä.
Kestilä advises that once the coffee is poured into the cup, it is advisable to let it cool for a moment. If you enjoy the coffee too hot, its flavors and aromas will not stand out. Many of us seem to make the same mistake and drink coffee too hot.
Better election coffee will be completed with these tips:
1. Enjoy coffee fresh
Coffee is a fresh product and at best a few weeks after roasting. Freshness and aroma are best kept in coffee when the coffee is stored as beans. The longer, the aromas and flavors evaporate the coffee, so it is not advisable to keep it in the closet for half a year.
2. Flour beans to the right roughness
It is a good idea to grind the beans freshly in the mill just before making coffee in the right grinding roughness. For example, filter coffee grinding is coarser than espresso. When adjusting the grinding roughness, keep in mind: if the coffee is too strong, grind coarse, if too lean, grind to the finer.
3. The correct proportions
The proportions are one of the most important steps towards the perfect election coffee. Depending on the method of manufacture, a different amount of coffee is measured. For example, for filter coffee, coffee beans are measured at 6 grams per decilitre. The proportions are most convenient to weigh with a precise scale. If the scales are not found at home, you can get a measure of just the right amount of coffee.
4. Fresh water is measured with a separate jug
A common mistake is that water is poured into the coffee maker with its own jug. It is advisable to pour the water into the kettle with a separate jug to prevent unnecessary fats in the coffee pot.
5. Always prepare the amount of coffee you drink and enjoy it in the right degree
The coffee is consumed in the right degree and is not standing on the kettle or reheated. It is always good to always make coffee the amount you drink at the moment. The water temperature should be 92-94 degrees.
6. Driver the filter bag
The filter bag is less absorbed by the taste of the paper in the coffee, when it is preferably watered with warm water before measuring the coffee chews.
7. Wake up coffee to life
For example, when making handicrafts such as V60 or Chemex making coffee, it is advisable to first revive the coffee chews during the Blooming phase, ie pouring a small amount of hot water over the coffee grounds before the actual extraction. Some coffee makers automatically have such a function.
8. Remember the purity
It is always advisable to rinse and clean the tools used to make coffee after use. It is also advisable to clean the entire coffee maker properly every other week, and it is good to use the equipment’s own cleaning agents, not too strong detergents.
The largest coffee festivals in Northern Europe, Helsinki Coffee Festival, will be held on April 25-27, 2025.
