Sophie Löw’s music as a solo artist is unconditional. Also as part of the Austrian Postpunk-Band Culk, she is on the previous records of her group in the finger-in-the-wound laying mode. But their songs, born on the piano and then developed further songs between chamber pop and songwriter music, which they publish under the name Sophia Blenda, have something hugging, together. Something more intimate.
In every song, the sum of the isolation becomes clear that she is a good observer – one that not only speaks for discriminated and suppressed groups, but with them. Music as a feminist dialogue. As support and clear message: you are seen.
She dissolves in English, sometimes in German, but always in the usual lyrical finesse structures that make pain invisible and gives the affecteds back their stage. In “70’s interior”, for example, she assures the victims: “It’s your story.” The music is created in the dark, where her piano mixes with strings and gentle drums. Your message breaks the train and climbs unstoppably – regardless of whether it sings in English or German.
