Tracy chapman Give her first interview on Friday for years. She spoke about the resuscitation of “Almost car“Thanks to a cover version of Luke Combs. In a conversation with the New York Times,, the musician reflected on her Appearance of the song On the side of Combs at the Grammys 2024. And what it was like to hear the success of the country version.
“It was great. It was a very emotional moment for so many reasons. Luke is a lovable person,” said Tracy Chapman about the appearance at the award ceremony with Combs. “Before we decided to do this, we had a good conversation. And we both agreed how we would approach it. Everything had to start.”
The musician said she “cried” when she entered the rehearsal room, supported by the band with which she had worked many years earlier. (Her last tour took place in 2009.) Chapman said that it was her idea to bring the guitarist Joe Gore, David Kershenbaum (who produced Chapman’s debut album), Larry Klein on the bass, Denny Fongheiser on drums and Larry Campbell on the violin – to bring together again for the performance.
“I did everything to prepare for the performance”
“And my crew. I have worked with some people over the years. For sound and light. And they all came. That was really something special, emotionally seen”, said Chapman And added: “All of these people came to the Grammys. And I’m very grateful for that. I did everything to prepare for the performance.”
Tracy Chapman said she felt the audience’s reaction. But she tried to be distracted by the people in the audience. “But I felt it. I think part of it is also that it was fun!” Explained Chapman. “The crazy thing about such events is that you plan and plan and plan. It cost a lot to get the whole thing on your feet. And then it is over in no time. And immediately afterwards you don’t know what you did. But I knew that we did it.”
When Chapman thought about Combs’ interpretation of the song, she said that she had “never dreamed of” that “almost car” Country song would be. But it felt like a circle. (The title was even for the CMA Awards 2023 Song of the year chosen.)
I personally never pay too much attention to the genre
“Because I started playing guitar at a very young age. And I think the reason why I wanted to play guitar was that I saw“ Hee Haw ”. My mother really loved it. And I loved the guitars, the sound, the look, ”she said. ‘But I think what makes this connection is that’ Fast Car ‘is a story song. And that is the basis of many country songs. I personally never pay attention to the genre. I don’t find it relevant or interesting.”
“It is a pleasant surprise that the song found this new home. I would not have predicted that it would go there. But the song has been covered many times and there are dance versions of it,” she added. “I can’t say that I would have come up with it too!”
The interview with Tracy Chapman took place on the occasion of the application of a vinyl edition of her debut album for the 37th anniversary. She said it was “surreal” to revive the LP. It put it back into the time when she was in the studio with Kershenbaum, which produced the plate. “I didn’t allow myself to have too many nostalgic moments,” she said.
In the interview, the singer also admitted that she still listens to music, but opts for physical editions instead of streaming.
“I still listen to music. I don’t hear as much as before. And maybe I’m now old -fashioned or someone calls me a technique enemy, but I don’t stream music,” she said. “I only buy music in a physical form. Artists are paid for when you actually buy a CD or a record. This is important to me. In a way, this limits my music selection. Because it is a physical obligation to go out into the world and find things. But I’m still going out.”
