It is currently not running for Germany’s best tennis player Alexander Zverev. The Hamburger is in a result crisis. Boris Becker finds clear words.
Despite the recent setbacks of tennis star Alexander Zverev, Boris Becker called for more support for the top German player. At an appointment at the Rothenbaum in Hamburg, the former world -class player emphasized that Zverev continued to be part of the top of the world – and it was therefore not appropriate to put it under pressure.
“A little too much pressure, too much expectation,” said Becker at the event. “He is still number two in the world. We don’t have a better one, so we should rather support him than always criticize him,” said the 57-year-old.
At the Masters 1000 tournament in Miami, Zverev was most recently excreted in the round of 16 against the French young professional Arthur Fils. Since his strong appearance in January at the Australian Open, where he came to the final, the Olympic champion from 2021 could not get into the decisive rounds at any tournament. Even more: Zverev also missed the chance of displacing the Italian Jannik Sinner from first place during his doping lock.
Becker sees the current phase calmly. In his view, the performance in Miami was “much better”. “What Sascha is going through is normal somewhere,” said the three-time Wimbledon winner.
The Hamburg Open will take place between 17 and 24. Alexander Zverev will probably not be there in his hometown because he wants to prepare for the French Open, which will start shortly afterwards. Jannik Sinner announced his participation in Hamburg for this. After the end of his doping lock, the world ranking list wants to get in the mood for the Grand Slam tournament in Paris.
