Exactly between the North Sea and the IJsselmeer is above ‘t Maaiveld, a campsite in Hoogwoud. It consists of five camping fields with a total of 43 places, as well as a Tiny House, two Bell tents and four wrap houses that are currently being built.

“We are busy renovating our campsite,” says owner Kees Vriend. Although he opens a little later than normal due to the renovation, the bookings flow in. “It’s going well. Almost 50 percent of the bookings for the season have already arrived.”

‘The Netherlands in small’

West-Friesland remains popular as a holiday destination. Logical, says friend, who himself also enjoys the region. “Our region has a lot to offer. Very views, old -fashioned villages, vast tulip fields, historic cities and the coast. It is actually the Netherlands in small.”

Although most guests come from the Netherlands, a growing number of foreign tourists also find the campsite. “Recently we welcome guests from countries such as Germany, Belgium and France,” Friend notes. He also sees that Spaniards go here because of the heat in their own country. “Last year we received dozens of reservations from Spain, which is a nice development.”

Festivation of the campsites

Friend expects that the attraction of West Friesland will only increase as a result of the disappearance of traditional campsites on the coast. “Many luxury holiday parks are built on campsites here, making the camper looking for new, surprising locations.”

According to him, that is less common in this region. He predicts: “Ultimately, the real camping enthusiast will come to West Friesland, because this area is more unique and rarer.”
