9 years ago: BVB comeback against Málaga – Santana’s miracle

Champions League 2012/13

In 2012/13 Borussia Dortmund narrowly lost 2-1 to FC Bayern in the German Champions League final. In a BVB season that offered gripping moments, especially on the international stage. Above all, the final act in the quarter-final second leg against FC Málaga on April 9, 2013 – exactly nine years ago today – should be remembered by every black and yellow fan for a long time. The main actor in the drama: Felipe Santana, who was supposed to switch to FC Schalke 04 in the summer.

Added time was long gone when attacker Robert Lewandowski crossed the ball inside into the fray. Several Dortmund players were suspected of being offside, Marco Reus put the ball across and in the end it was defender Santana who somehow pushed the ball over the line to make it 3-2 and made the Dortmund stands shake.

Due to the goalless draw in the first leg, BVB had to throw everything forward again. After Eliseu was temporarily 2-1 down in the 82nd minute, there was silence beforehand. “I thought I had seen it all and then this! We were already dead. When the goal was scored to make it 3-2 – that was the most emotional moment ever,” said Managing Director Hans-Joachim Watzke afterwards.
