Until 1 May, the Tax and Customs Administration has received almost 9.5 million income tax returns. The declaration campaign for 2021 that ran from 1 March this year has thus come to an end. 6.8 million private individuals and 1.5 million entrepreneurs received a request to file a tax return this year. In addition, people also submit an income tax return every year of their own accord, because they may be eligible for a refund.
State Secretary Van Rij of Fiscality and the Tax and Customs Administration can look back on a successful campaign: “The tax return period went according to plan and went satisfactorily. We wanted people to be able to report as easily as possible. At the same time, we know that some people find filing tax returns a difficult task. Fortunately, we have been able to help thousands of people file a report. People could also contact social organizations such as libraries and trade unions and senior citizens’ unions. I want to thank them for that.”
Almost 30,500 people helped by the tax authorities
A total of 30,481 agreements have been made for filing a tax return. 18,470 appointments were made for telephone assistance, 11,454 appointments for assistance from an employee on location and 557 appointments were made for assistance via video calling.
First final assessments are sent
Since the end of April, the Tax and Customs Administration has started sending messages to people who had filed a tax return before April 1. This is earlier than previous years. This way people quickly know whether they have to pay tax or get money back.
The tax returns of people in box 3 have been kept separate by the tax authorities. These people will receive a final assessment from August, taking into account the judgment of the Supreme Court. People who have made a declaration before 1 May and expect a refund in 2021 will first receive a provisional assessment so that they will already receive a refund around July. They will later receive a final assessment, taking into account the judgment of the Supreme Court.
Facts and numbers
The vast majority of returns are submitted digitally to the tax authorities. Between 1 March and 1 May, the Belastingtelefoon received more than 650,000 telephone calls about the income tax return. A total of 4,500 questions about the declaration were answered via the social media channels. Many questions from private individuals concerned their own home, while entrepreneurs had questions about, among other things, ROW (‘result of other work’).
