The chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee is being organized for the 88th time. The tournament was organized for the first time in 1938. Back then it was still an employee tournament for the steel company. The tournament has now grown into a tournament with an international field of participants and is also called the ‘Wimbledon of chess’.

Chess celebrity Magnus Carlsen is not participating this time. Carlsen participated in the chess tournament nineteen times in total. “I would have liked to have him there. There was contact recently, but he has become a father. I think Magnus has not yet played his last tournament in Wijk aan Zee.”
