800th edition: These albums changed our lives

Since the first German-language edition of MUSIKEXPRESS, i.e. since July 1969 and thus since 799 issues, we have been trying to understand and pass on pop music and the culture that goes with it. We analyze, we contextualize, we review, we philosophize, sometimes we babble and should rather dilute it.

For the anniversary with our 800th edition we want to do it differently: This is about what leads us to music. And despite all the brain teasing, that’s the heart first – or the stomach when the bass hits you in the gut and makes us dance without us knowing who wrote this song, who remixed it and in which year it was released on which label has appeared.

So we write about feelings and they are written in such capitals that we devote almost the entire issue to them. Where else you’d find behind-the-scenes coverage of new acts, records, scenes and trends, 40 of our core writers and 40 musicians pour their hearts out and write about life-changing albums. They touched and inspired. Who opened up a world to them. After which nothing was like before.

So let’s dive into lifelong loves, unforgivable youthful sins, and most of all, lots and lots of personal anecdotes. Because in addition to all nerd knowledge, in addition to all checkerism, the perception of music is primarily subjective – and must always remain so. In this way she unites us, lets us fall into each other’s arms and makes wonderful arguments possible. Living pop culture.

The MUSIKEXPRESS issue 08/22 will be in stores from July 14th.

800 issues of the Musikexpress – the big anniversary!

Then someone else would say that print is dead! Despite the supposed omnipotence of algorithms, MUSIKEXPRESS has been defending its regular place at the kiosk for more than 50 years, where it July 14th can be found in his 800th robe.

MUSIKEXPRESS started in 1969 as an independent, German version of the Dutch model. As Germany’s oldest music magazine, it has long since become an icon: MUSIKEXPRESS explains the pop-cultural present, builds bridges to the past and looks to the future.

After all, no pop song just comes into being on its own. There are always underlying influences, lines of tradition to be followed. Showing these contexts is the job of MUSIKEXPRESS. But not only!

After all, music is primarily a matter of the heart – it touches us whether we want it or not. That’s why we’re dedicating our anniversary edition to 80 albums that changed our lives. 40 regular authors of the magazine and 40 celebrities such as Tocotronic, Thees Uhlmann, Wanda, Noga Erez, Sportfreunde Stiller, Calexico and Robert Stadlober write about records after which nothing was the same: from the Beatles to Bowie to Florence and Kendrick Lamar. There is a lot to (re)discover!
