Then someone else would say that print is dead! Despite the supposed omnipotence of algorithms, MUSIKEXPRESS has been defending its regular place at the kiosk for more than 50 years, where it can be found in its 800th guise from July 14th. 40 regular authors of the magazine and 40 celebrities such as Tocotronic, Ezra Furman, Wanda, Noga Erez, Sportfreunde Stiller, Calexico and Robert Stadlober write about records after which nothing was the same. 80 life-changing albums from David Bowie to The Cure to Florence and Kendrick Lamar. There is a lot to (re)discover! In this train, for example, our own past – and now you come into play!
MUSIKEXPRESS started in 1969 as an independent, German version of the Dutch original “Muziek Expres” – founded in Den Haag in 1956, the magazine already included the first text sheets in German for the local audience at the end of the 1960s, from which a separate magazine soon developed. Mike Love from the Beach Boys was our first title hero in July 1969 with a timid grin, successor Bee Gee Barry Gibb already showed his proud winner’s smile. Then came the Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, one after the other (both, as was proper for the bad boys of rock ‘n’ roll back then, not exactly beaming with joy). Less than a year after our debut, in June 1970, Melanie, who was just celebrating her international breakthrough with her Woodstock ode “Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)”, featured a woman on the cover for the first time. By the way, the first article in the German MUSIKEXPRESS: Reader Barbara (spelled “Baraba” incorrectly) as the winner of a competition – she had sent in the most beautiful love letter to Ulli Günther, boss of the beat combo The Lords (“Poor Boy”), and was allowed to now spend a whole day with their idol. As you can see: ME readers are winning – to this day!
Because on the occasion of our round anniversary, we are now giving away the first twelve historical issues of MUSIKEXPRESS, in a painstakingly restored form on high-quality paper. Strictly limited, as it is often said, but usually not true – but in our case it is: one piece. So one of you can soon look forward to a whole historic vintage of ME – but only one. Are you the only one? Find out!
And now the prize question: In our long and glorious history, who has graced our cover photo most often?
a) a Rolling Stone or the Rolling Stones
b) power station or a robot
c) a Beatle or the Beatles
d) The doctors or one of the band members
e) Depeche Mode or one of the band members
Simply fill out the form and enter the correct letter and/or the correct band as the solution word, for example “d)” or “d) Die Ärzte”. The deadline for entries is July 25, 2022. Legal recourse is final. Much luck!
