7th stage of the Giro d’Italia: Italian Bais wins the day at the first mountain finish

Status: 05/12/2023 6:47 p.m

At the first mountain finish of the Giro d’Italia, the Italian Davide Bais prevailed in a three-man breakaway. Lennard Kämna finished the seventh stage with the top favorites. Andreas Leknessund defended the overall leader’s pink jersey.

Davide Bais from the EOLO-Kometa team on Friday (05/12/2023) after 218 km from Capua to Gran Sasso d’Italia at an altitude of 2,130 m ahead of the Czech Karel Vacek (Corratec-SelleItalia) and his compatriot Simone Petilli (Intermarché-Circus). -Wanty) through.

Lennard Kämna was at eye level with the top favorites at the first mountain finish of the 106th Giro d’Italia. The 26-year-old from the Bora-hansgrohe team, who has ambitions in the overall classification, crossed the finish line on the mammoth ascent to the snow-covered high plateau of Campo Imperatore at the same time as world champion Remco Evenepoel (Belgium) and Slovenian Primoz Roglic.

The Italian Bais had never finished on the podium in a race before. The breakaway trio broke off early and successfully defended their lead on the climb up the snow-capped Apennine peak. However, it only got really steep shortly before the finish – at over 2,100 meters above sea level.

However, the classification drivers refrained from attacking. Andreas Leknessund (Team DSM) stayed in the pink jersey, Evenepoel appeared to have recovered well from his crash on Wednesday, and the Vuelta champion sprinted to fourth place.

Kämna loses helper Aleotti

In the further course of the Giro d’Italia, Kämna has to do without Giovanni Aleotti, an important helper in the mountains. As the Bora-hansgrohe team announced on Friday, Aleotti did not start the seventh stage due to a positive corona test. The 23-year-old Italian had previously shown symptoms and was immediately isolated. Compatriot Nicola Conci from the Alpecin-Deceuninck team also had to leave the Giro on Friday due to an infection.

Eighth stage on Saturday from Terni to Fossombrone

The eighth stage on Saturday leads over 207 km from Terni to Fossombrone. The profile is wavy, three late climbs offer breakaways good chances of success. The second time trial over 35 km is on the program on Sunday, a good opportunity for opening winner Evenepoel to regain the pink jersey.

Last year, Lennard Kämna was successful in chasing stages at the Giro d’Italia. From Saturday he will be fighting for a good place in the overall standings in a new role. But the favorites on a difficult course are different.
