In the country, truffle hunters are often the victims of mine explosions and other violence. Members of the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) also killed and kidnapped people who wanted to earn money by collecting truffles.
The search for truffles leads to remote desert areas, where extremists have their refuge. There are often mines in those areas. More than 180 collectors have died in recent months, according to the NGO.
The aid organization Handicap International estimates that after more than a decade of civil war in Syria, up to 300,000 mines and duds lie in the territory. IS once controlled large areas there.
