60,000 US State Department emails stolen by Chinese hackers | Abroad

According to the employee, who wished to remain anonymous, emails were stolen from ten accounts. All of these accounts were from contributors covering East Asia and the Pacific. The ministry itself has not yet responded to this announcement.

It was previously announced that US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo had fallen victim to the hack, as well as the US Ambassador to China and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink, who has East Asia in his portfolio.

The Chinese hacker group, dubbed Storm-0558, was able to access the email accounts by using a weak spot in Microsoft’s cloud system. The technology company previously announced that 25 organizations worldwide were affected by the hack.
