“Mighty proud of the boys”
The German U17 footballers have reached the final of the European Championship for the first time since 2015. Coach Christian Wück’s team beat Poland 5-3 (1-2) in Felcsút/Hungary on Tuesday. The final in Budapest this Friday is against France, who defeated Spain 3-1 (0-0) in the evening. The fourth and last European Championship title came in 2009, when the 2014 world champions Shkodran Mustafi and Mario Götze were there.
Hoffenheim’s Max Moerstedt (22nd), Dortmund’s Paris Brunner (57th) and Charles Herrmann (65th), Schalke’s Assan Quedraogo (79th) and Robert Ramsak from FC Bayern (83rd) scored the goals for the enthusiastic performance German team. The Poles were twice ahead thanks to goals from Daniel Mikolajewski (7th) and Karol Borys (31st), Filip Wolski (68th) had provided the equalizer shortly after the first German lead.
The young Germans had already secured participation in the U17 World Cup by beating Switzerland in the quarter-finals. “We’re really proud of the boys,” said coach Wück after the final whistle. “I hope that Germany will now also notice that a generation is growing up here that tears itself apart on the pitch for the national jersey and brings the German mentality to the pitch – just as it used to be.”
