5000 police officers on duty in Berlin on May 1st

Support comes from Bavaria to Schleswig-Holstein, from nine federal states: A total of 5,000 police officers will be on duty in Berlin on May 1st.

After all, 15 demonstrations have been registered, including the DGB at the Brandenburg Gate and a large bicycle parade through the residential area of Grunewald in the afternoon.

The most sensitive meeting: the revolutionary May demonstration of the left-wing scene with a hard core of around 500 left-wing extremists. It is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. in Neukölln at Hertzbergplatz and lead to Oranienplatz in Kreuzberg. The motto “Yallah class war – No war but class war!”

The exact route has not yet been determined, however, because the district of Neukölln is planning to break the fast and have a street festival on Sonnenallee and Hermannplatz.

The left scene speaks of “dirty tricks”. The courts will probably decide now. The “Myfest”, which used to calm the situation in Kreuzberg, is not taking place because of Corona.

Up to 20,000 demonstrators are expected on the problem train. “I really hope it goes peacefully. But a small part will probably take advantage of the situation for pyrotechnics, throwing stones and bottles,” said Interior Senator Iris Spranger (60, SPD) on Tuesday after the Senate session.

Posters will also be about the planned police station at the dealer hotspot Kottbusser Tor (Kreuzberg).

In view of the family celebrations planned in Neukölln, the SPD politician has concerns about the use of water cannons. Spranger: “I’m careful there, but I don’t get involved. That’s what the police operations command decides.” Although they are usually ready for action on May 1st, they are not on site from the start.

The police were “very well prepared,” promised Spranger. You proceed again according to the principle of the “outstretched hand”.

Last year there was also a riot in Neukölln in the evening. Rioters dragged dumpsters and pallets onto the streets and set them on fire.

The record at the time: 93 injured police officers, 354 arrested. May 1, 2021 was still in the peak phase of the pandemic – with a mask and distance rules.
