50 million euros for better bicycle paths
“We want every child, senior, working… in short, every West Fleming to be able to cycle safely in traffic. That is why we are working hard to get the cycling infrastructure in good condition in our province,” says Brecht Warnez.
This concerns investments for the construction of new and the maintenance of existing bicycle paths with a view to increasing road safety for cyclists.
70 projects in West Flanders
“As part of the investment programme, 328 million euros will already go to bicycle infrastructure in 2022, of which about 50 million will be spent in West Flanders. With this, the Flemish government is fulfilling its promise to increase the bicycle path investments to 300 million euros. Flanders recognizes the great social importance of a high-quality cycling network,” says Brecht Warnez.
In West Flanders, there are 70 projects spread across the province, ranging from installing extra lighting and maintaining bicycle paths to the complete redesign of dangerous points.
“Still work to do”
Not all projects are yet in progress. “There is therefore a need for proper follow-up to ensure that the works and adjustments are carried out in a smooth and efficient manner,” says Brecht Warnez.
“The local authorities work together with Flanders to monitor the various projects. West Flemish cyclists deserve a safe road. We make that our top priority,” concludes Warnez.
